The cost keeps going up every year to maintain a guest book without ads, so I'm discontinuing it.

Arrived in country in early December 1966 at Da Nang, C130 to Chu Lai then 6by to Hill 54 between Da Nang & Chu Lai. SSgt Lukenbill? and Sgt Ski were the Platoon Sgts. Cpl Jerry Basnett was the Fire Team Leader and later took over the squad. Cpl Fitzpatrick was the second squad leader then. We manned the Chu Lai air strip perimeter until May 1967 and then hell broke loose and we were choppered off to the Que Son Valley. I was there for operations Union I, Union II, Cochise and Swift. In an August 4, 1994 article in Vietnam magazine Eric Hammel called operation Swift one of the worst run and bloodiest Marine Corps operations of the Vietnam War. Father Vincent Capadonno, the 3rd Battalion Chaplain whom I'd known from Hill 54 chapel, received the posthumous award of the Medal Of Honor for his actions on Sept 4 during Swift. There seem to be many names missing from the database during this period. Great work, great pictures, thanks for your care. I recognized one name and face. Semper Fi Marines.

I served with delta company 1/5 but was wounded Feb.4th in the chest we were hand to hand fighting between Phu Loc and Phu Bi on highway 1 it took us about 7 hours to get back to the hill where we were stationed. The falling morning on the 5th I along with my squad leader I believe his name was Teague. We got to the 1st hutch and I was going into the front door or opening and Itold him about the booby trap,so he told me to go through the back and he and I were wounded at the same time. He was wounded in the back and I in the left arm.

I was a battalion radio operator for A and D company's for a while and possibly B company. The rest of the time with H&S 1/5. After 2 extensions they forced me out to 2nd CAG for the 3rd extension. After Phu Loc 6, Hue, Truoi bridge, and Liberty bridge, we had a company commander that didn't believe in having a full magazine in the weapon (in the bush unless on the move). After being over run so many times, I didn't always agree with that philosophy.

To all who served with Dying Delta, Semper Fi. Several years ago, I was asked to participate in an interview about my time in the Corps and Vietnam, which I did, but I wanted to put a face, the character and personality to the questions asked and wrote a memoir to do that. It is called "The Best of the Best - The Fighting 5th Marines - Vietnam". I cover my life from childhood to joining the Marines, life in the Corps before, during, and after Nam, my life since. So it is not all about Nam, but I do go into the Union operations in great detail from my own perspective, particularly May 12 and June 2, 1967.You can read reviews of this book at Amazon.com and would appreciate your reviews if you care to post them. Men of valor, men of God, what has life taught you? Have you learned to love in spite of being ostracized by those whose freedom you protected? Have you managed to marry and have families that respect and love each other? Have you turned your face back to the God who you believed turned his back on you? The men I knew did overcome the ugliness that the war brought into their lives and were capable of loving themselves and those around them. I believe these truths are still so. I have always considered it a privilege and an honor to have been a part of your circle. I continually uphold you in prayer and hope that you know you have a special place in my heart.

I'm so happy to have found this website. The photos are very important to me. I am personaly in several of these photos along with men I served in Vietnam with. Some of the photos on this web page I have in my hand. I don't know how they ended up on this site.I lost a bag of my photos on the way back to the bush from Danang where they were developed.I would love to find out who has them so I could at least get copies back. Can you imagine finding them after 40 years. My friend Steve Larson from VA had some photos of us in Vietnam but were lost when his home burned.

Comments:
I have tried several times to contact people of this website. I find it sad because previous family could not keep up that I should have to be punished. My father was a great man that taught me to stand up for what I believe. I believe that I am true to my word and would like if someone would communicate with me from this website. I try not to be rude or pushy but this is my 3rd request from this site and I know I didn;t take my sister this long to get a reply. Maybe this site is not longer in touch with people that served with mhy father but I would love to know either way so I can stop wasting my time.

Thank you

Love and blessings to the men of Delta 1/5: I fondly recall the revival that was taking place among you almost 10 years ago. I sincerely hope that your pursuit for God's love and acceptance is ongoing. You were a close-knit group when I was a part of your circle. I feel assured that you are still as close if not closer and that your circle has grown substantially. You have a permanent place in my heart and I pray that you are all thriving. I am the youngest of five brothers, all of whom served our contry in the military - three Army and two Air Force. I wish to know ho I might go about getting more information about the service of my brother, Harry Carl Mahan, known as "Doc" by those who served with him in Vietnam (He was a licensed Chiropractor) and other locations. He was 82nd Airborne, but got his wings and flew everything the Army had in the air at one time or another. He flew helicopters in "Nam" and had a couple shot out from under him. On February 11, 1966, he flew missions that resulted in his receiving the Distinguished Flying Cross (He also received 26 Air Medals, one with a Valor device). This is the citation language:
"For heroism, while participating in aerial flight, evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam: Captain Mahan distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 11 February 1966 while serving as pilot of a helicopter during combat assault and medical evacuation missions near Tan An. After two flights into one assigned landing zone, Captain Mahan made his third approach to the combat area. As he landed in the new zone, heavy fire opened up from 100 meters away. Although his aircraft received several hits, he returned to base for more troops, and twice more braved the Viet Cong weapons to bring in reinforcements. Captain Mahan delivered the troops, departed for his base, and was released from duty. Yet, when a call was put out for aircraft to evacuate wounded from that same area, Captain Mahan volunteered to return. He was forced to remain on the ground four minutes for the loading of casualties, during which time medical corpsmen repeatedly hit the ground in reaction to outbursts of fire. After delivering the wounded and refueling, Captain Mahan made his fifth approach to the besieged zone, this time in near darkness. Calmly ignoring the tracer rounds fired at his aircraft, he picked up the remainder of the casualties. At high risk to his own life, he successfully reinforced the weakened ground force and brought wounded men to medical treatment. Captain Mahan's outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army."
Brother Carl is suffering today with a rare muscular and brain degenerative disease, and his brothers are trying to get him further recognition, though he may not know what we do or even who we are at times.

Does anyone out there know how I might go about finding some of those brave men whom Carl's actions saved? What other information might I ned to secure to help? Out of true modesty, he never talked about his service, so we don't have much to go on.
Thanks.
Randy Mahan - rmahan@sc.rr.com

Tomorrow will be the 42nd aniversary of the battle of Operation Union 1. As I recall the we had been chasing the hell ot of the NVA. Thinking that it was only a couple of companies. Well what a surprise a full Division waited for us and opened on the lead platoon. That particular day I happened to be the rear guard (the last of the last). When Delta Co stablished the perimerter my squad became the flanking force. I was the leadman. With a jammed rifle I advance leading my fire team. We got hammer as we tried to advance. I got hit tring to jump over a high dike. Grogan, got hit on the arm,Noel on the hip untill they killed the #@%$#^%. My thanx and gratitude for those who rescued me. Ramos,Timko,Fierro, and my Brother Marines. S/F.

A brief note to inform readers of this list that your friend Leonard Bruguier passed away two weeks ago in Mexico. Details are sketchy, but I know that he was cremated shortly after his death.

I knew Leonard when we were in graduate school in the late 1980s at Oklahoma State University. We became good friends, and he often spoke of his admiration for the Marines with whom he served; when the recruiters were on campus he was always the first to speak to them and buy them a cup of coffee. I thought that members of the 1/5 would want to know.

Best -
Clyde Ellis

My best friend since Junior High School days (1958-9) became another casualty of the Vietnam War on 2009-02-26. He had been 200% Disabled per the VA for many years, 300% during the year before he left us. The VA said, "Oops! We failed to let you & your doctors know that test results showed you had Diabetes due to exposure to Agent Orange and that's why various parts of your body are shutting down." During that last year, he became born again & reunited with his sister, 3 years younger than us. We both turned 62 in Sep 2008, him 20 days after me. He passed in peace, a bowl of beans in his lap & ice cream softening up in the kitchen for a sundae dessert, plus a religeous pamphlet on the arm of his lazy boy chair he was in. He is no longer in pain and is now with Jesus & God. I salute him!
